Web design and online marketing

I’m an experienced web designer and expert user of Dreamweaver and File-Transfer Protocol client software, as well as software applications used to create Flash animations, online forms, search engines, streaming media container pages, and more. I know how to create an effective information architecture and I have experience with Content Management Systems, website analytics, eCommerce and online marketing tools, and different front-end vs. back-end components.

I have planned, designed, and built several websites and know from experience how to create aesthetically pleasing designs that work in synergy with the overall information architecture, as well as with the layout of the individual web page. As a content manager, I’ve been responsible for creating content whose usability and accessibility were optimal to the end user, including copy, artwork, and videos.

I planned, designed, and built a regional American Lung Association website (external link to Internet Archive) that included, among other things, the following features.

  • Streaming media
  • Animations
  • Section for news media
  • Online forms

I also planned and designed an HTML-based eNewsletter disseminated via eMail and through the website.

The first three videos were created with stock images and stock media. Text-to-voice and animation software applications were used for reading parts.

I localized 30-second Asthma Walk PSA (2006) and prepared it for professional broadcasting. I also localized above national PSA and edited it down to a 15-second Asthma Walk PSA and prepared it for professional broadcasting.

Graphic design, print media

I have print media experience and skills. I know how to create original artwork of print-ready quality as well as in house draft layouts of brochures, newsletters, and annual reports. I have the ability to visualize the final print product early on in the process.

I served as Managing and Production Editor for a regional American Lung Association newsletter (27,000 copies). As such, I coordinated the production process from beginning to end, outlined newsletter content, drafted articles, created original artwork, secured print-quality images, and prepared draft layout for printer. I initiated and implemented a newsletter facelift that resulted in a professional looking, aesthetically pleasing publication (see Spring 2006 newsletter).

I coordinated the production process of fifteen different versions of four quarterly Thank-You postcards for regional American Lung Association.

In addition to coordinating the production process, I also created the four different designs, two of which were based on historical American Lung Association material. I also helped draft the language.

A total of 49,500 postcards were printed.

I designed a t-shirt design for a national project of the American Lung Association.

I designed the invitations for a Christmas Seals Exhibit.

I created an event trademark ("nine lungs" logo) used for the marketing of an annual Medical Conference of regional American Lung Association.

In addition to creating the event logo, I re-designed the brochure layout. In so doing, I created a professionally looking and aesthetically pleasing, yet modestly priced, event brochure.

While working for a San Francisco workforce development agency, I was tasked with creating an annual report. The agency had not issued an annual report in recent years, so I had no precedent to use as a foundation. Starting from scratch, and by myself, I conceptualized and planned the annual report, created close to all of the artwork, drafted most of the language, and prepared all of the layout.

Writing samples

I possess an aptitude for research, analytical thinking, and writing.

Freelance Article on Nuclear Terrorism

I completed my graduate thesis in May of 2000.

The thesis included a case study on Al-Qaeda and the possibility of nuclear terrorism.

Among other things, I proposed that Al-Qaeda wants to create mass-destruction in the US and that New York City and Washington, DC are likely targets.

Before leaving graduate school, I had an article published about the same topic in a student newspaper.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, I re-wrote the case study from my graduate thesis and published it as a freelance article on the potential of an emerging terrorist nuclear threat.

Media coverage and branding

While working for a regional American Lung Association, I devised media strategies that helped increase organizational visibility around the San Francisco Bay Area.

These media strategies resulted in the same Letter to the Editor being published by several different print publications on more than one occassion.
